Dubai

Dubai is one of seven emirates in the UAE. Although Abu Dhabi is the capitol, Dubai holds the most international fame and certainly attracts the most tourists. Originally a twin city with Deira on either banks of the creek, Dubai (now “Bur Dubai”) on the south and Deira on the north.

Why I chose to travel to Dubai?

I lived in the Middle East for 7 years growing up and have always loved it there. I first visited Dubai in transit in 2002, but planned a proper holiday in 2011. I loved the city, especially Bur Dubai and Al Mina/Al Satwa areas as these are more authentic to the vibrance of the Middle East. I returned again in 2013 and then 2018 and I’m currently planning another trip. The food, the people, the culture, the music and the climate are just a few reasons to love this part of the world.

Traditionally a trading port linking the Indian subcontinent to the middle east and traders to Europe. The area’s rich fishing and pearling offered an opulent economy. Dubai was also a port for smuggling gold in and out of India. This is certainly a reason to visit the museums in Bur Dubai.

Under the ruling family, plans were made to make Dubai into an emirate that relied on business, financial and tourism creating a vibrant economy rather than petroleum products. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, wrote “My Vision” encompassing his plans on transitioning the emirate into the future.
