Itinerary for Mexico City
How to plan an itinerary for a certain number of days
Mexico City is doable as a couple of days layover, but to truly experience the essence of the city you would need about a week at least. You can experience the food culture in a day or two, Teotihuacan is half a day at least, the museums are more than a day (Anthropology is probably easily five hours alone).
Day-specific planning:
Sundays are definitely days of rest, to be shared with your family, in Mexico City. Expect some businesses to be closed and the parks to be full of people having picnics. Some parks, museums and restaurants are closed on Mondays. Lucha Libre is held on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as some Sundays and Tuesdays.
Check for public holidays, as well. I made the mistake of not checking once, and found myself in CDMX on Labor Day/International Workers Day. A lot of the city was closed for the marches (standard across the globe) and many street food stalls were closed or opened late.
As with any itinerary planning, it is best to determine what you want to do and how that relates to where you are staying. Access to the metro is particularly useful in Mexico City. And of course, being able to walk to multiple points of interest helps.
Monday:
Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Park) is closed. Fonda Margarita is closed. Anthropology Museum is closed.
Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday (potentially Fridays):
Lucha Libra at Arena Mexico. Saturday is definitely the best day to go.
